Have enjoyed serving as president of the Wisconsin Kiters Club since 2020. In 2024, I’ll hand over the reins to long-time kiter, Jeff Kuhns, who joined us upon moving from Nebraska a couple of years ago.
With the help of a strong core membership over these last three years, we brought kiting to people and communities across our state, throughout the Midwest and nationally at the American Kitefliers Association (AKA) convention and events coast to coast.
Kiters, Kuhns, Christi Mercier, Tim Renzelmann, and Jared Smith, are among newer members whose investments in large kites and ground displays have enriched the jaw-dropping experience and lasting memories the club strives to deliver.
In addition to attracting members, adding a robust new Website and Facebook member group, we’ve established events including:
- Windsor’s Windy Kite Fest in partnership with the Deforest-Windsor Area Chamber of Commerce (watch)
- The Mead Wildlife Area Kite Fly in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (watch)
- The Waupaca Kite Festival in partnership with the Waupaca Library and regional airport (watch)
- The Kids Fly in partnership with the Sister Bay Advancement Association
- Kites Over Awesome Lake Antoine in Iron Mountain, MI, in partnership with Friends of Lake Antoine Park (Updated to 3/8 – 3/9)
- Kiting at the Frozen Assets Festival on Madison’s Lake Mendota in partnership with the Clean Lakes Alliance. (watch)
In 2021, we sponsored the AKA Ascension Pin and, over these last three years, made and distributed 2,000-plus kids kites. These helped fund the club, in addition to our modest annual $15 family membership, and brought smiles to countless children and parents at kite festivals and community events enhancing the quality of life statewide.
In a word, the Wisconsin Kiters Club is awesome! Our members are kind, passionate, knowledgeable, creative, obsessed and most of all… family. I couldn’t have anticipated serving as club president, much less moving to Wisconsin, when our members first invited me to fly with them while at the Great Lakes Kite Festival in 2017. I’m glad I did and am forever grateful.
